Day Five – September 6, 2021 – On the Route to Buffalo, WY

On Day Five we departed from Custer, S.D. missing two of the Corvettes.  One had a clutch failure and the other had tires worn down to the steel belts. Unfortunately, this was Labor Day, so getting service was going to be difficult at best.  The remaining 10 corvettes and the Yukon moved on with hopes that our friends would catch up quickly.

First stop – Deadwood S.D.

Several of the group went to visit Adams’ House.  Built in 1892, the Queen Anne-style home is well-known for its oak interiors, hand-painted canvas wall coverings, stained-glass windows, thoroughly modern 19th century plumbing, electricity, telephone service, and original furnishings.  The house sat silent for more than 50 years after W.E. Adams’ death in 1934. His second wife, Mary Adams, left everything intact, from the sheet music on the piano, the books in the library and the china in the pantry to the patent medicines in the bathroom, and even cookies in a cookie jar. The home was purchased by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission in 1992 and restored as a house museum in 2000.  The house is believed to be haunted.

Next stop, Belle Fourche, S.D.    This small, unassuming town has been determined to represent the geographic center of the United States.  The actual center is approximately 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, but in a relatively inaccessible location.  Prior to the addition of Alaska and Hawaii to the union, the center of the U.S. was approximately 2 miles Northwest of Lebanon, Kansas.

We were surprised to find that there is a rather extensive collection of American Motors Company cars here in Belle Fourche. Many have been beautifully restored.

After a lunch stop, we pressed on to Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming.

From here it was a bit of a drive to reach Buffalo, WY where we stayed for the night.  Next stop, Red Lodge , Montana.
